What we do…

CHEMICAL WASTE DISPOSAL
Medi Chem; disposes or recycles hazardous salon goods and  processes the chemicals to render them inert  or repackage for disposal.

WASTE / RECYCLE DISPOSAL
Clear recycle systems in each salon using painted bins that mirror Auckland City Council system.
Multiple waste disposal systems in each department for glass/card/plastic/cans.
Composting system for all food scraps and coffee grinds which is delivered to Kelmarna Gardens every week.
Printer cartridges; refilled or recycle.
Foil; recycled by Medi Chem.
Re-use all paper twice.
Shred all company paper used twice and use for all Sans packaging.
Old Billboards given to WAS and made into retail satchels.

MARKETING
Johnston Press Print; Recycled paper & vegetable dyes used in all areas.
Spam DM; Contact all companies & have us taken off database lists to minimize waste.

CAFÉ
Organic fair trade coffee.

ORGANIC HAIR COLOUR
Use Cellophanes by Sebastian; semi permanent vegetable hair colour. Non-toxic and gentle on skin as well as the environment.

GENERAL
Peace lilies placed around working environment. Absorbs toxic odours and fumes.

No disposable plastic to be brought into the environment.

EDUCATION
Quarterly staff education in the form of a documentary or guest speaker.

EXTERNAL
Once a year, a select number of Stephen Marr staff are given a paid day off to actively participate in the national Wetlands program.

What you can do…

REDUCE
Switch from disposable to reusable.
Purchase bleach-free toilet paper.
Avoid products that are packaged for single use or small travel size.
Skip the shopping bag.
Stop junk mail.
Take Tiffins to takeaway restaurants.
Don’t accept plastic or polystyrene (polystyrene is not recyclable).
Purchase a reusable café cup for take-out beverages.
Don’t print out your emails.

REUSE
Donate your old clothes and other products to charity.
Reuse envelopes.
Shopping bags; buy a jute or canvas bag to take to the supermarket.
Buy second hand/recycled goods instead of brand new.
Donate your old computer equipment, look for places online that will take old hardware.
Buy products that will last, and take care of them.
Use both sides of each piece of paper.
Buy used books.

RECYCLE
Create designated holding “bins” for each type of recycled product.
Buy products/containers made from recycled material.
Leave grass clippings on the lawn as fertilizer.
Start a compost or a worm farm.
Buy eggs in cardboard – its recyclable and better than plastic.
If purchasing new tyres ask if your old tyres will be recycled – if not, find out if there’s a tyre-recycling centre in your area.
Recycle your printer’s ink cartridges or refill your used ones.

YOUR FOOD
Choose Fair Trade certified products.
Buy local, eat seasonal and go for producers that employ sustainable practices.
Buy bulk foods and choose items without packaging.

CONSERVE ENERGY
Swap to a renewable energy company – Meridian.
Switch power off at the wall when not in use, including lights.
Reduce water flow.
ALWAYS purchase local product as the air travel used to import goods requires a vast amount of energy consumption.
Check labels on food to make sure ingredients are not imported i.e pork, fruit etc.
